BIO
Wuwu is a mixed media artist that specialises in digital drawing and curation. Starting her artistic career in 2019, she now operates out of OCADU in Toronto, Ontario. Wuwu is a fourth year undergrad student studying drawing and painting.
She works independently and with others to produce fine/digital artworks along with exhibitions relating to women, women of colour and mental health within the Black community. Moonlighting in gallery operations, she has spent countless hours observing and contemplating the current status quo of mainstream art and attempts to subvert the conventional perspective. Wuwu’s work uses the body in form and portraiture to dive into the concepts of women, their sexuality and their mental health. Even before leaving high school she has spearheaded several notable exhibitions within the last few years. As an initial member of the integrated arts program at Innisdale High School and as a leader in recent Almeda (BSU) exhibitions Wuwu continues to push the envelope when it comes to connecting and representing her communities artistic perspective as well as carving out a voice for black female youth. Integrated Art Solo Exhibition (highschool 2019), Come as You Are (Almeda exhibition 2022), Almeda exhibition (at Stikeman Elliot LLP, 2023), and Up to the Sky BHM (Almeda exhibition 2023) have highlighted Wuwu’s exhibits that further speak to her progression along with identity.
As she steps forward through her educational career, Wuwu has her sights set on establishing lasting artistic avenues and opportunities for people similar to her. Incorporating her curation skills and operational know-how Wuwu will be hosting both solo along with collaborative exhibitions locally and internationally in the near future.
Artist Statement
Black excellence and inclusive thought play as the undertone to Wuwu’s world. A place of multidisciplinary art represents the balances the surreal and the natural forms only to juxtapose the bright palettes with what can sometimes be dark and serious statements. The overt use of expression is a cornerstone Wuwu’s current work. Allowing a varying audience to gain insight into a new narrative.
Keen to disrupt today's standards, Wuwu aims to decentralise and deinstitutionalize the way her audience receives her art. Reclaiming art to once again be subjective and reflective of the true human story through images and exhibits that challenge expectations. Reflective of the spolia in which Wuwu lives and is, this Toronto artist utilises mixed media to create work with an emphasis on women of colour, their complex socio-cultural roles in society and to further their narrative, Wuwu finds herself at the forefront of a new age of representation. As Wuwu completes her educational career she continues to broadcast and distil this message locally, preparations are underway to explore these thoughts, work, and agenda internationally.
